Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is a national public institution, the oldest institution of higher education in Mozambique. It was founded on August 21, 1962, by Decree-Law no. 44530, under the name of Estudos Gerais Universitários de Moçambique. In 1968, it rose to the category of University, being then called the University of Lourenço Marques.

On May 1, 1976, President Samora Moisés Machel named this Institution Eduardo Mondlane University, in homage to the important historical role played in Mozambique by Doctor Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane. It is also in his honor that the 20th of June, the date of his birth, is celebrated as Eduardo Mondlane University Day.

Eduardo Mondlane University assumed itself as a national university from an early age, having conceived a policy that guarantees equal access to students from different regions of the country and seeks to maintain and increase the female presence in the institution. It is a public institution of higher education endowed with legal personality enjoying scientific, pedagogical, administrative and financial autonomy. Through UEM, passed many generations of young people who today perform functions and activities in the most diverse spheres of society, at the level of government, social, economic and service sectors, both in the Country and internationally.

The history of UEM, since its creation, reflects the periods in the country's history, which influenced and determined the teaching, research and extension process, from the definition of professional profiles in terms of training to the type of research to be carried out. considered as a priority.

Today, Eduardo Mondlane University is part of a social context of market economy and is present in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Zambézia, and, through distance learning, throughout the country and abroad.
